Congratulations to our under 16 hurlers and management, who in their first competitive games of the season emerged victorious in the annual Naomh Padraig under 16 tournament.
The tournament was made up of four teams, Cushendall, Glenariffe, Naomh Padraig and the boys in black and amber.
The format being two 40 minute semi finals, 3rd/4th playoff followed by a 40 minute final.
Glenariffe won the first semi final V Cushendall and our boys then faced Naomh Padraig in the other semi final. The town winning on a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-2. The goals coming from the outstanding Joe McToal and Seamy McAuley, who like the rest of the twenty players used in this game, showed fantastic team play and workrate throughout the 40minutes played. Great team spirit showed by all the boys, highlighted by Smitty who had a quiet day until he had to pull off a brilliant save in the middle of the second half to keep the first of his two clean sheets intact.
Semi final: Naomh Padraig 0-2 McQuillan 2-13
In the final we played Glenariffe in a good hard final. The town boys took a while to get started after an hours break between the semi final and final, but still took a good half time lead of 2-4 to 0-2. Both goals coming from a rejuvenated Lorcan Donnelly, who finished with a total of 2-1 to his name. Playing against the breeze in the second half, the boys pushed on and won through on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-2 to lift the first silverware of the season.
Final: Glenariffe 0-2 McQuillan 2-8
Outstanding defensive play from the whole team to only concede four points over the two games and good movement from the forwards paid dividends. Well done boys and management.
